One Little Mistake...

(Or: How one tiny bolt could cost 12 million dollars...)

Lots of graphics. so BE PATIENT!

Look closely at the picture above. Can you see that the old tower (being replaced by the new one) is leaning away from the new tower? This condition was brought about by a bolt that snapped after the new tower had been erected and the antenna had been transferred to the new tower. This led to a series of disastrous events that demonstrate conclusively why we will never again attempt construction of another Monster Tower in early spring (windy) months.

These two towers (2,000 feet tall) were separated by only 40 feet at the base. This was in order to enable work crews to swing supplies from one tower to another as well as to save money by not requiring the two television stations whose antennae were co-located on the towers to add new transmission line from the building to the actual tower base.

As you can see, the microwave dishes and other appurtenances were still mounted on the old tower (right) when these final photos were taken before the tragic collapse.

Can you tell, in the photo above, that the old tower (right) has now reversed it's direction of lean and is now leaning toward the new tower?

In the above photo, the old tower (left, in this photo) is once again leaning away from the new tower! At times, the old tower was swaying by as much as 20 or more feet!

A closer view of the preceding photo that really shows how the old tower (left) was severely leaning from about 2/3 of the way up to the top.

The tower site about an hour after the two towers came crashing down. Note the guy-wires all over the place.

Tons of twisted and mangled steel came crashing down within a matter of mere seconds.

The 4 ton yellow gin-pole (used in the erection of such structures) was mangled into a pile of garbage that would lead one to believe it was as limber as spaghetti.

Tower sections that weigh more than a ton are flattened by the force of the impact. The legs on each section are 6 inch diameter solid steel. These legs are not hollow!

A twisted and mangled satellite dish. (Does this look anything like a dish that we've seen mangled in Shamrock, in the past?)

Of course, in any kind of an accident of this nature, local law enforcement will be on hand to investigate.

The leg flanges (2 inches thick, solid steel) are rather severely dented, as evidenced in the above photo. Those dents are NOT supposed to be there.

The base of the old tower is obviously a mangled mess as evidenced in the above photo as viewed looking through the ice-bridge that originally reached out to the new tower.

A new digital television transmitter sitting in ruins inside a totally destroyed building.

Another view of (what's left of) the building.

This large C-Band dish only suffered a single fracture. But, as with everything else on the site, it will have to be replaced.

Another view of the yellow gin-pole. Also, another view of (what's left of) the building.

Another view of the building from yet another angle. You can see one of the old transmitters standing inside the building. The ladder is the same ladder the workers use when climbing and working on the towers so, as you can clearly see, there's not really anywhere to go for protection when the section you're hanging on is almost one half mile straight up!

More building shambles.

The new digital transmitter inside the destroyed building.

The least damaged side of the building.

A close-up view of a leg flange that shows several of the bolts that failed.

See that leg section that's completely sheared? It's six inches thick and SOLID STEEL!

More flattened tower sections.

Same as above. More flattened tower sections

You too, can achieve this same level of resounding success if you're only willing to let several red-neck idiots steal your work-resources while you attempt to fulfill your contractual obligations while your engineering resources are being unlawfully held by the thieves. Does "Sovereign Immunity" (as claimed by the IDIOTS in Shamrock, texas) sound like a logical excuse for the ignorance that causes unnecessary loss of life?
