AM broadcasting, even though it is the oldest form of true "broadcasting, brings up some very unique technical issues that have, for a large part, been almost totally ignored by the "modern crowd".

Some people (particularly station owners and managers) tend to see AM as a form of "black magic" engineering and generally will tend to let an AM station literally fall apart before taking any form of corrective action.

Please, take some time and read through this section. We'll be adding much additional information to it as time allows in the  hope that we'll be able to help in removing some of the "dark fear" from this thing called "AM Radio"...

Quite regularly, the Enforcement Bureau issues its monthly "List of Actions Taken." At the last issuance of this report, several Notices of Apparent Liability were issued, along with Notices of Violations. It is interesting to note that under the Notices of Violations concerning the Emergency Alert System, numerous other broadcast violations are cited. Apparently, the Field Inspectors went out looking for EAS problems, but took time to find many other things as well.

Among the additional items listed were: antenna structure registration problems (including not posting the registration numbers on the towers), equipment performance measurements (commonly called NRSC measurements), operating tolerances (including power and AM monitoring points), logs, chief operator agreements, and public inspection files. Even in today’s environment of consolidated ownership and streamlined rules, the Commission still expects broadcasters to follow the rules that remain!

If you run a directional  AM, how long has it been since you had your antenna system proofed? The FCC is stepping up enforcement related to AM DA's and it's a good idea to have yours proofed AT LEAST ANNUALLY.

Recently, we worked on an AM DA whose management had failed to properly maintain and document their antenna system and "POOF": Instant $15,000.00 N.A.L.! Now, they're paying for the antenna proof plus several times that amount in penalties! This is not really a good way to save money...

Due to the nature of this work, prices must be quoted on an individual basis but, we usually beat out any competitive bids by a 10% to 30% margin. Plus, if you can help us sign up additional stations in your area, you'll each get a substantial "quantity discount"! (You can look at this as "Compliance Insurance" and the costs are deductible, as a business expense, while the fines and penalties - many times this amount - brought about by not having these services performed are not.)

Application & Technical Insurance

In addition to providing Broadcast Technical Services to review or prepare an application, we will also show how you can increase your chances of obtaining a license in the event of competing applications.

We can also file petitions to deny against competing applicants if requested by you and if the facts and law warrant such a petition.

If a programming time-share agreement with competing applicants is required by the FCC, we will negotiate and put together an agreement for you and obtain FCC approval. Fees for post-filing services, will be at reasonable hourly rates and in addition to those quoted in our "regular rates".

Reasonable Rates

MonsterFM.com exists to provide affordable, reliable and technically accurate broadcast technical & consulting services. You'll find our fees to be among the most competitive in the industry.

Many prospective clients have asked us why they would need a professional technical consultant to assist with filing an application with the FCC. The answer to this question is simple:

  • The FCC imposes very strict technical requirements on applicants and imposes very strict requirements as to who is eligible to apply. Because of these requirements, if your application is not in strict compliance with FCC rules and "letter perfect," with all of the required documentation and technical exhibits complete, it will be dismissed without a chance to file again!
